Unfortunately, we all get tooth decay, whatever our age. If you still have your original teeth, you may develop cavities. When bacteria (and eventually plaque and tartar) build up on your teeth for too much time, acid grows and eats away at your tooth enamel to make cavities.

Luckily, there are many ways to mitigate your chance of getting cavities. With a little discipline, you can practice these habits to protect your chompers.

-Brush with ADA-approved toothpastes containing fluoride. Fluoride, a mineral, strengthens enamel, making it more difficult for bacterial acids to pierce the enamel. If you’re brushing twice every day, you’re also getting rid of plaque-forming bacteria and acids from your mouth.

-Floss once a day. When done correctly, flossing can be a helpful way to fortify your oral hygiene. Use about a foot-and-a-half of floss per session and use new sections of floss for each tooth.

-Drink fluoridated water. Almost all public water supplies have been enhanced with fluoride, so if you’re drinking your correct amount of H20 daily, you’ll also be getting lots of fluoride!
