What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a dental specialty that deals with the alignment and appearance of your teeth and jaws.
What is an orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has received 1 or more years of additional training following the completion of dental school in order to provide treatments that improve the alignment, function, and appearance of your teeth and jaws.
What is a malocclusion?
A malocclusion is more commonly known as a bad bite. It is caused when the teeth are misaligned, and can affect your smile and your ability to chew effectively. There are several types of malocclusions, including overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites.
Who can benefit from orthodontics?
Anyone can benefit from orthodontic treatment! Our practice offers orthodontics for children, teenagers, and adults. As long as your teeth and supporting structures are healthy, you can receive the treatments you need to correct your misaligned teeth and achieve a healthier smile.
Why straighten teeth?
Straight teeth not only look better, they are also easier to take care of. When your teeth are properly aligned, brushing and flossing are easier and more effective. There are fewer areas in which plaque and bacteria can congregate, and your risk of tooth decay and other dental problems is greatly reduced.
Do braces hurt?
Braces do not hurt when applied to your teeth, but you will likely feel some discomfort while your mouth adjusts to the appliance, and following any appointments where our dentist readjusts your braces. This discomfort should be mild, and should not last longer than a few days at most.
To relieve discomfort, you can chew sugar-free gum (which increases the blood flow), rinse with warm salter water (about 1 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water), use dental wax, or take a mild pain reliever.
When should my child have an orthodontic evaluation?
Children should receive their initial orthodontic evaluation at around age 7. At this age, their permanent teeth have begun to erupt, and our dentist can spot any potential problems to determine if and when treatment is necessary.
Are there foods I should avoid while wearing braces?
Yes. Certain foods can damage or become trapped in your braces. We recommend that you avoid chewy, sticky, crunchy, and hard foods. Our dentist will provide you with more specific recommendations when you receive your braces.
What do I do if my braces break or come loose?
Contact Samuel Yee DDS INC immediately at 949-831-3111. We will make an appointment for you as soon as possible so that our dentist can repair and readjust your appliance. If possible, save the broken parts of your braces and bring them with you when you come to our office.
Can I still play sports and musical instruments while wearing braces?
Yes. While you may need to make a few adjustments, braces will not prevent you from playing sports or musical instruments. In fact, you should be able to do everything with braces that you could do without them! If you play a sport, we recommend that you use a sports mouth guard to protect your appliance and your mouth.
Do I need to have a tooth extracted for braces?
Thanks to advances in dentistry, people rarely need to have teeth removed to achieve the best results for their orthodontic treatment. However, if you have extremely crowded teeth, our dentist may recommend removing a tooth prior to your treatment
